Zaan Region

Just outside Amsterdam, tucked away in the smoke and shadows of the capital,
lies the Zaan Region: an area that is surprisingly diverse and globally unique.
Here, water, history, industry, and nature come together in a special way to create
a landscape full of character and contrasts.

This region is known as one of the world’s oldest industrial areas, once home to hundreds of windmills turning simultaneously and laying the foundation for the early industrial revolution. Today, that heritage is still visible in historic villages, authentic wooden architecture, and vibrant cultural heritage sites.

At the same time, the Zaan Region offers plenty of opportunities for water-based recreation. From boating through picturesque canals to relaxing in expansive natural reserves, you’ll find peace and space just minutes from the city.

The blend of culture, heritage, water recreation, and nature makes this region truly unique. Visitors won’t find a typical destination here, but a lively mix of past and present. The Zaan Region is a place where every visit becomes a diverse and authentic experience, right next to the energy of Amsterdam.
